چکیده

In polyphonic music, melodic patterns (motifs) are frequently imitated or repeated, and transformed versions of motifs such as inversion, retrograde, augmentations, diminutions often appear. Assuming that economical efficiency of reusing motifs is a fundamental principle of polyphonic music, we propose a new method of analyzing a polyphonic piece that economically divides it into a small number types of motif. To realize this, we take an integer programming-based approach and formalize this problem as a set partitioning problem, a well-known optimization problem. This analysis is helpful for understanding the roles of motifs and the global structure of a polyphonic piece.

Automatic Transcription of Flamenco Singing Melodic Transcription of Flamenco Singing from Monophonic and Polyphonic Music Recordings

We propose a method for the automatic transcription of flamenco singing from monophonic and polyphonic music recordings. Our transcription system is based on estimating the fundamental frequency (f0) of the singing voice, and follows an iterative strategy for note segmentation and labelling. The generated transcriptions are used in the context of melodic similarity, style classification and pat...

Detecting Melodic Motifs from Audio for Hindustani Classical Music

Melodic motifs form essential building blocks in Indian Classical music. The motifs, or key phrases, provide strong cues to the identity of the underlying raga in both Hindustani and Carnatic styles of Indian music. Thus the automatic detection of such recurring basic melodic shapes from audio is of relevance in music information retrieval. The extraction of melodic attributes from polyphonic a...

Automatic Melodic Grammar Generation for Polyphonic Music Using a Classifier System

In this paper, we propose a method to generate newmelodic styles (melodics) in the automatic composition of polyphonic music. In the proposed method, a melodic style is represented as a grammar that consists of rewriting rules, and the rewriting rules are generated by a classifier system, which is a genetics-based machine learning system. In the previous studies of grammatical approaches, the p...

A search method for notated polyphonic music with pitch and tempo fluctuations

We compare two methods of measuring melodic similarity for symbolically represented polyphonic music. Both exploit advantages of transportation distances such as continuity and partial matching in the pitch dimension. By segmenting queries and database documents, one of them also offers partial matching in the time dimension. This method can find short queries in long database documents and is ...

Sweepline and Recursive Geometric Algorithms for Melodic Similarity

This extended abstract gives an overview on two contentbased retrieval algorithms for symbolic music, developed earlier in the C-BRAHMS group [1], that took part in the Symbolic Melodic Similarity and Query by Singing/Humming tasks of the MIREX 2006 contest [3, 4]. Given two excerpts of symbolically encoded monophonic or polyphonic music, the query pattern and the target music, the purpose of t...
